The Loss of Financial Security

My, have things changed!  I chose to take a year off after graduating with my Master’s to get caught up on those things neglected over the past 3 years.  I could do this, because I worked hard and graduated 2 years early!  I had a plan.  I would take a year off and then start looking for a job to be working by the time the 5 years was up.  This is how long I was to get rehabilitative alimony from my ex.  Well, to my surprise, he decided all of a sudden to stop paying the alimony all together, setting a mediation date, hoping to change our divorce agreement.  I had already been looking for work at this time with no luck.  Of course, this sent me into a state of panic!
With property taxes coming due, I needed that job more than ever!  Because I didn’t know I would lose my income, I didn’t plan ahead.  I went to interview after interview, every outcome the same, “You just don’t have enough experience.”  I guess education isn’t everything!!!  I started selling Hannah’s old clothes and some flower barrettes I was making.  I even babysat and cleaned houses, anything to make a buck.  Still, I was not going to be able to pay those property taxes.
The Lord was certainly teaching me through this season.  I was so stressed and at my wits end!  I engrossed myself in my bible study searching for answers.  I saw myself in the waiting room trusting God’s plan, which this is all part of.  Unfortunately, my plan wasn’t God’s plan.  I just didn’t know what God had in store, but I had to trust Him blindly.  That’s FAITH!
As I prayed for a miracle, I had to cut off all extra expenses and really pinch pennies.  I had to explain to Hannah why she may not have so many Christmas presents this year.  It can be unnerving watching her father spend money frivolously on himself and not thinking twice about his daughter.  His selfish nature sure showed its colors.  I found myself struggling just to buy groceries and gas!  Yet, I didn’t qualify for public aid since I had too many “assets”.  All I needed was a little boost for a short time, just to get by for now.
Thankfully, my mother came through and loaned me the money to pay my property taxes.  This was a huge relief and blessing!  I also applied for an interest free for a year credit card to cover my expenses.  I hate to owe money, but I am on survival mode right now, and at least there is no interest.  Now I pray to have an income soon, so I can pay my debt and be able to support my family again.
I pray that I will learn all that God is trying to teach me through this experience.  I have never had to struggle to this extent, at least not since I was out of college and had a family.  It is tough when something like your coffee maker breaks and you can’t afford to replace it.  I guess it could be worse!
One thought that helps me when I get discouraged is to picture my bank account as the basket of bread and fish in the bible in Luke 9:16-17.  From one small basket of food, God fed 5000 people!  God is able to multiply what I have to provide for our every need.  He is still ABLE to work miracles!
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”  God will provide that job in His perfect timing.  He has a plan even in this situation.  One day, I will recognize God’s hand in this.  For now, I must be patient, seek God, and trust in His plan.  I pray for wisdom and guidance…

Feelings....A Fun Story!

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others including Love.madbird One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all repaired their boats and left. Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to persevere until the last possible moment. When the island was almost sinking, Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you take me with you?" Richness answered, "No, I can't.. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you." Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel, Vanity, please help me!" "I can't help you Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered. Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, "Sadness, let me go with you." "Oh...Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!" Happiness passed by Love too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her! Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come Love, I will take you." It was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that he even forgot to ask the elder her name. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her way. Love, realizing how much he owed the elder, asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who helped me?" "It was Time," Knowledge answered. "Time?" asked Love, "But why did Time help me?" Knowledge smiled with deep Wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is."

Snowshoe, West Virginia Ski Trip

For spring break 2014, I decided to do something new and plan a SKI trip!  This is something even I had never done before.  In fact, I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen snow!  I wanted to find a place that we could drive to.  So, we chose Snowshoe, West Virginia.  Our Spring break started on Friday, March 21, when we went to the Zoological Wildlife Foundation near Homestead.  That was an amazing experience in itself, as we were able to interact with many exotic animals.  Saturday, we did the Run or Dye 5K in the morning, ran home to finish packing, and started our drive.  We stayed the first night with my parents in Umatilla, FL.  We drove on to St. Augustine, FL on Sunday and met some friends there, Temo and family.  We had a great time discovering the rich history of Florida.  That night, we stayed at another friend’s house, was Christine Weltmer.  I hadn’t seen her since middle school!  Monday, we spend another day in St.
Augustine, before driving on to Columbia, South Carolina.  We arrived at our Super 8 at 10:30 pm!  Tuesday, we were to arrive in Snowshoe, so we had a lot of driving to do on this day.  What was supposed to take 7 hours, took 10 ½ hrs because of stops and SNOW!  We started seeing a little snow on the ground in North Carolina.  This was VERY exciting!  We stopped in Virginia, where it was actually snowing, and we had a snowball fight!  The rest of the drive had on and off snow, but usually pretty light.  It wasn’t until we started up the mountain the snow got scary.  We went through some heavy snow that was piling up on the road.  It was hard to see anything but white!  My tires were spinning, and I really didn’t think we were going to make it through.  We were sliding on the road!  This is probably the most scared I have ever been, like for my life.  We started praying!!!  Then it wasn’t long that we could see the road again.  God totally cleared things up for us!  We both felt very grateful and humbled.
God is so good!  By the time we arrived at the resort, it was dark and snowy.  We were very excited to see all the snow!  It was oh so cold at about 24 degrees on Snowshoe.  Most of our drive in the snow was around 36 degrees, give or take.
On that first night in Snowshoe a heavy snow fell with howling wind!  It was colder than we could imagine!  We were thankful to not be driving on this day in all the wind and snow!  We were safe and sound at the resort, ready for our ski lesson.

23 Things That Love Is

23 Things That Love Is

Love. What is it? A quick Google search will produce several billion answers. Billion - with a B. Yet if you were to read through just a few of those websites, you would end up massively confused about this thing called love.
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I thought it would be appropriate to invite you to consider love once again. Instead of Googling the answer, we will spending a few days in the source of Truth, learning from the source of Love.
Below are 23 things that love is. This list was excerpted from my newest devotional, "The Invitation To Love." With your donation of any amount to my ministry, you can get this 10-part devotional resource today.
You have been welcomed into eternity by the God of Love, and he welcomes you - right here, right now - to love others in the same way. It’s an invitation unlike any other.

  1. LOVE IS... being willing to have your life complicated by the needs and struggles of others without impatience or anger.
  2. LOVE IS... actively fighting the temptation to be critical and judgmental toward another while looking for ways to encourage and praise.
  3. LOVE IS... making a daily commitment to resist the needless moments of conflict that come from pointing out and responding to minor offenses.
  4. LOVE IS... being lovingly honest and humbly approachable in times of misunderstanding.
  5. LOVE IS... being more committed to unity and understanding than you are to winning, accusing, or being right.
  6. LOVE IS... a making a daily commitment to admit your sin, weakness, and failure and to resist the temptation to offer an excuse or shift the blame.
  7. LOVE IS... being willing, when confronted by another, to examine your heart rather than rising to your defense or shifting the focus.
  8. LOVE IS... making a daily commitment to grow in love so that the love you offer to another is increasingly selfless, mature, and patient.
  9. LOVE IS... being unwilling to do what is wrong when you have been wronged, but looking for concrete and specific ways to overcome evil with good.
  10. LOVE IS... being a good student of another, looking for their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs so that in some way you can remove the burden, support them as they carry it, or encourage them along the way.
  11. LOVE IS... being willing to invest the time necessary to discuss, examine, and understand the relational problems you face, staying on task until the problem is removed or you have agreed upon a strategy of response.
  12. LOVE IS... being willing to always ask for forgiveness and always being committed to grant forgiveness when it is requested.
  13. LOVE IS... recognizing the high value of trust in a relationship and being faithful to your promises and true to your word.
  14. LOVE IS... speaking kindly and gently, even in moments of disagreement, refusing to attack the other person’s character or assault their intelligence.
  15. LOVE IS... being unwilling to flatter, lie, manipulate, or deceive in any way in order to co-opt the other person into giving you what you want or doing something your way.
  16. LOVE IS... being unwilling to ask another person to be the source of your identity, meaning, and purpose, or inner sense of well-being, while refusing to be the source of theirs.
  17. LOVE IS... the willingness to have less free time, less sleep, and a busier schedule in order to be faithful to what God has called you to be and to do as a spouse, parent, neighbor, etc.
  18. LOVE IS... a commitment to say no to selfish instincts and to do everything that is within your ability to promote real unity, functional understanding, and active love in your relationships.
  19. LOVE IS... staying faithful to your commitment to treat another with appreciation, respect, and grace, even in moments when the other person doesn’t seem deserving or is unwilling to reciprocate.
  20. LOVE IS... the willingness to make regular and costly sacrifices for the sake of a relationship without asking for anything in return or using your sacrifices to place the other person in your debt.
  21. LOVE IS... being unwilling to make any personal decision or choice that would harm a relationship, hurt the other person, or weaken the bond of trust between you.
  22. LOVE IS... refusing to be self-focused or demanding, but instead looking for specific ways to serve, support, and encourage, even when you are busy or tired.
  23. LOVE IS... daily admitting to yourself, the other person, and God that you are unable to be driven by a cruciform love without God’s protecting, providing, forgiving, rescuing, and delivering grace.
LOVE ONE ANOTHER!!!!  Happy Valentine's Day!

How I Experienced God...A Story of Faith

This bible study group came to me at the perfect time in my life, where I needed confirmation from God.  Just before this study was to begin, I had my very own experience with God.  He doesn’t speak to me in this way very often.  If fact, it had been 3-4 years!  I woke up from a dead sleep in the middle of the night, feeling wide awake thinking about how I needed to move with my daughter out of South Florida.  There were no other details just that strong idea placed in my head.  I couldn’t go to sleep, my thoughts were so loud.  So, I got up and started Googling the best cities to raise a family.  Many cities were named, but the one that kept standing out to me, maybe because of familiarity, is Colorado Springs.  I started praying about where I was to move my family as I searched.  In the weeks and months to come, I kept seeing signs pointing toward Colorado or Colorado Springs.  It was on the news, mentioned on my favorite TV show and in conversations with people.  Colorado Springs just kept popping up everywhere, so the feeling grew that this is where God was leading me.
About a month later, I started studying Experiencing God by Henry and Richard Blackaby with a small group of single ladies from my church.  This happens to be a study that I had really wanted to do for the past 4 years after going through the Esther study by Beth Moore (also amazing).  I was placed with a wonderful group of Godly women, who offered support and companionship.
In Day 1 of the very first Unit, the story of Abraham was mentioned with the bible verse, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you (Genesis 12:1).” This is exactly how I was feeling being told to leave, but not knowing for sure where to go or even HOW to go.  Remember, I am divorced and am not supposed to move my daughter far from her father.  This is why I had never considered moving before.  Besides that, I didn’t want to move her away from her father or his family, which play an important role in her life.  I never wanted to move to South Florida, in the first place.  I followed my ex-husband here.  I have no family here, but I do have many friends, as I’ve now lived in South Florida for almost 14 years.  I don’t, however, have a job yet, so this would be a good time to start somewhere fresh if I was going to.  But moving would be scary, especially to a place where I don’t know anyone.  So, I was simply trusting God and continuing to pray for one step at a time without getting too ahead of myself.
At the end of Unit 1, I learned that, “When God is about to do something, He reveals it to His people.  You cannot stay the way you are and go with God.”  Day 4 talked about how, “God’s invitation for you to work with Him always leads you to a crisis of belief that requires faith and action.”  In order to be obedient, a major adjustment may be required.  If we look back at how God worked through Bible characters, we see that, “When God spoke they knew it was God, they knew what God was saying, and they knew what they were to do in response.”  My problem was that I knew what God was telling me to do, but I didn’t know how it was possible legally.  I simply started by taking one day at I time.  I knew God was telling me this for a reason, and I had to trust Him with the outcome, whether I end up moving or not.
My crisis of belief was knowing how humanly unachievable this seemed.  I feared my ex-husband’s response.  Moving so far away seemed so impossible, or at least calling for a huge battle in court.  Is that what God wants?  I found in the study that with Moses God first told him the plan, then He told him how and what he was to do.  I still didn’t know the how in my situation.  But I did know that all things are possible with God, including this big move, if it is truly God’s will.  One quote that kept me faithful was, “When you believe nothing signification can happen through you, you have said more about your belief in God than you have declared about yourself.”  I continued to trust God and pray that He would make His will clear to me.
Unit 2 began with how to live a God-Centered life stating, “God-centeredness requires the daily death of self and submission to God (John 12:23-25).”  Sin is the outcome of a self-centered life.  I continued to focus on what God was doing, rather than my own fears.  As I read further, I learned that if we do not submit to God’s will, He will allow us to follow our own path.  However, we will miss what God wanted to do on our behalf or through us for others as part of His plan.  In other words, we will miss the blessing.
Furthermore, it is also important to be able to decipher God’s will from our own.  If we want something bad enough, we might think the idea came from God, when really it came from our own desires.  In order to know for sure, one must know God’s voice by maintaining a love relationship with him.  The better you know someone, the better you recognize them.  God can speak to us in different ways.  We each are capable of a personal relationship with Christ.  He can use the bible, prayer, circumstances, the church, or another way to communicate with us.
In that moment, when God is speaking to you, that is the time He wants you to respond to Him.  He doesn’t mean for you to wait several months or even years down the road to decide God’s timing.  He speaks when He is ready to move.  I had been thinking that God was telling me to move, but He could mean many years down the road, until I read this.  God meant for me to act now.  So, I started preparing for a move.  I may not have control over my ex-husband’s response to the news, but I was in control of the small things I could be doing now to prepare for a move.  It was then I found a realtor and began looking at houses near Colorado Springs.  I also started going through my house to get rid of clutter and organizing, which would make a move easier.  So, I was being proactive, although still wondering how God would pull this off.  I set the goal of putting my house on the market in January to move the following summer, if God willed it.
I was feeling more and more confident that I was experiencing God through this bible study at the perfect time.  I trusted God with the outcome.  I was doing my part.  As I thought about it, the timing for a move was really quite perfect.  I had recently finished grad school and had a 2-year financial buffer to move and get settled in a new home.  I could see how things were falling into place.  Yet, I feared a fight with my ex-husband as I try to move our daughter so far away.  But I also knew if it’s God’s will, He would handle him.  It would be nothing short of a miracle if this came to pass, because I had no legal grounds to move.  I went back and forth in my mind thinking, “There is no way in the world my ex-husband will just willingly allow us to go.”  Then I would argue back, “But all things are possible with God.”  Then I read, “Human reasoning will not give you God’s perspective.”  This told me that I needed only be concerned with what I was humanly able to accomplish to move toward this goal.  I also thought to myself, “Sometimes God tells us exactly what we need to know in a given situation.  But the outcome is God’s alone.  I was content being obedient knowing that it was possible that ultimately, God would not actually move us at the end of all this, but maybe He intended to accomplish a different outcome, one in which I may not fully understand.”  All I knew is that I had to be obedient today and not worry about what was going to happen later.  I prepared for a move.
In Unit 4 I was reminded again of the story of Abraham.  God told Abraham to sacrifice his one and only beloved son, simply because He commanded it.  I can only imagine what Abraham must have felt, but he trusted God completely with the outcome.  In the mean time, Abraham went through all the steps of getting to the point of the sacrifice.  I believe Abraham must have known God would not allow him to go through with this.  But he continued in obedience all the way to raising up the dagger to kill his son, when God stepped in and changed the plan at the last moment, providing the ram for sacrifice.  God was developing Abraham’s character to be the father of a nation.  He needed to see that Abraham would obey him no matter what the cost.  This story reassured me that whether or not a move actually occurs in the end, I just had to continue in obedience until God tells me different.  If I get to the point of sharing these plans with my ex-husband, and he says no way, then I have my answer for, “His commands are not burdensome (1 John 5:3).”  The door is closed.  But I also knew that God can work on his heart, and he could allow it.  So, the future remained unknown, and I continued working toward that move. God doesn’t mean to restrict us with His commands, they are to be freeing.
It is sometimes humanly impossible to understand God.  How He does things and the way He thinks are very different from ours and may often sound mistaken or unachievable.  I could guess the reasons God would choose for us to move from South Florida, but it didn’t really make sense.  Frankly, it was a scary prospect, yet exciting at the same time.
Experiencing God has a whole unit on joining God where He is working.  As I thought about how God may be working in Colorado Springs and what that may have to do with me, I remembered that Focus on the Family is located in Colorado Springs.  I am to be a Mental Health Counselor.  Possibly God intended for me to work there as a Christian counselor, which would be like a dream to me.  However, I didn’t want to get too ahead of myself.  This was just an interesting observation and possibility for what God may have in store for my career.
I continued in prayer, praying for God to work through me and show me His way.  In 1 Kings 8:56, Phil. 1:6, God says that when He lets His people know what He is about to do, it is as good as done.  When God speaks, He guarantees it will happen.  I started talking to a hand full Christian friends about what I was experiencing.  For the most part, they kept saying, “Wait and see.  God will do this.”  I started seeing the testimony I could share if this move did come to pass, and I was filled with excitement.  Every week in my bible study, the ladies were anxious to hear what I had experienced during that week’s study.  I knew that I could leave everything behind, because God would go with me.  I knew He would provide all that I needed, and the blessing awaited me in Colorado Springs.  If I choose not to obey, I am sure to miss the blessing that God has for me.
I did have some people who didn’t believe that I truly heard from God.  In Unit 5, I learned that God speaks to different people in different ways.  The way God speaks to me may not be the same for someone else.  We each have a personal relationship with him.  All I knew is that I was sure what I heard.  The Lord spoke to me plain and clear.  I knew His voice, because I have a personal relationship with Him.  The more time you spend with God, the better you will recognize him.  In that moment when God clearly spoke to me, all He said was to move with my daughter away from South Florida.  Next I started praying about where to move.  God stated the answer to that question in a different way, but that doesn’t make it any less real.  He answered through signs, having Colorado Springs mentioned all around me for months.  God may not tell you every detail at the beginning, but He will tell you exactly what you need to know to make necessary adjustments and to take the first steps of obedience.  God tells you all that you need to know to act now.  When He wants to you to do more, He’ll offer more instruction in His timing.  In order to discern God’s will, pray and wait.  Have patience.  Depend on God’s timing.  If He’s silent, seek Him more intently.  Strengthen your love relationship with Him, in the meantime.  John 8:47 states, “He who belongs to God hears what God says.  The reason you do not hear is because you do not belong to God.”  I heard God speak.  I know what I heard because I belong to God.
Like Moses in Exodus 3:11-4:13, I knew I heard God, but I questioned Him.  We can get so tied up in trying to debate God instead of simply trusting Him.  When you choose not to obey, God may stop speaking to you.  I chose to do all that God told me to do for now, even though I didn’t fully understand.  In the story of Noah and Abraham, God eventually shared with them His purpose in the work He had for them.  In Noah’s story, He was going to destroy the world.  In Abraham’s story, He was going to build a nation for Himself.  What was God doing in my story?  Well, He hadn’t told me that part yet, which meant I was to only worry about what God did tell me to do.  The rest will come in His timing.  I still believed that God could make a way for us to move, but I also knew that if this came to pass, it would be completely and totally because of God, for it seemed impossible.
In Unit 5, I started praying that God would make a way for us to do as He commands, for it would take a miracle for my ex-husband to allow us to move.  I started thinking about what I can do now to prepare, tasks that are within my reach.  I decided to get a realtor in Florida to see what my house is worth.  I also decided it was time to share these plans with my ex-husband.  I was going to send Him an email, in order to give him time to think about His response.
Up until this time, my feelings had gone back and forth.  I wasn’t sure what to set my heart on.  Will I be moving next year, or will there be a closed door at the end of all this? It was time to know.  My heart desired to see a miracle!  Although, I knew one way or another, I have been obedient and God will bless me.  I trusted God with the outcome.
In Unit 6, I read, “I will never give you an order without releasing My power to enable it to happen.  Trust Me and obey Me, and it will happen.”  This Unit made me believe it really was going to happen.  Somehow, God was going to work on my ex-husband’s heart.  But all along, a little doubt lingered.  I trusted God.  I knew that if it was God’s will, He would enable the outcome.  So, I decided to just release the outcome completely and totally to God.  All I needed to know is that I was working toward what God told me to do.  I was doing my part.  God would have to take care of my ex-husband and enable this move.
As I looked at houses in Colorado Springs in my price range, I noticed that I could afford a much larger house than I have here.  The cost of living is lower.  Houses there have basements!  I wondered what I would do with the extra space.  I prayed about it.  God told me that I could have bible studies and even house missionaries in the extra bedrooms.  God can use the extra space!  Looking at houses in the mountains with lots of trees and land was very exciting!  I wanted this move to happen more and more.
I was a woman of faith.  I believed that God called me to this assignment, and He was the One who would provide for attainment.  I continued to think on the blessing God might have for me in Colorado.  Without firm faith, I would stumble and fall.  I didn’t want to fall.  I wanted to see God’s outcome.
Unit 7 explains, “When God speaks, He is revealing what He is going to do, not what He wants us to do for Him.  He wants to work through us if we will join Him.  God does not expect us to accomplish the task with our limited ability or resources.  With faith, we can confidently proceed to obey Him because we know He is going to bring to pass what He purposes.”  In Mark 10:7, Jesus indicated that what is impossible with man is possible with God.  But we must remember, we won’t always understand God’s purposes in a given situation.  The outcome may not come to pass as we expected.  At the same time I hung on to this, “Then you and the people with you will rejoice that you have experienced Him.  You and the people around you will know more of Him than you have ever known before.”  The people around me were my ladies bible study group and the others I shared my story with.  I wanted so much to be a testimony of faith to all.  I wanted my story to glorify God.
I was willing to make the necessary adjustment.  To show faith you must be willing to act.  Action requires adjustment and obedience.  Some requirements for obedience are, “You cannot stay where you are and go with God at the same time.  Obedience is costly to you and to those around you.  Obedience requires total dependence on God to work through you.”  Sometimes, you have to be willing to take that leap of faith.  Following God isn’t always easy.
In Unit 8, I heard back from the email I sent to my ex-husband about the move.  He responded as humanly expected, denying my plea.  I was really hoping God would enable this move in the end by working on his heart in a way unimaginable to man.  I was hoping for a miracle, knowing that most likely this would be the outcome.  But I wanted so badly to trust God and see Him come through in the end.  Now, I’m left wondering what this was all for?
At that very time in my reading the chapter stated, “Sometimes obedience to God’s will leads to opposition and misunderstanding.”  I admit I was feeling discouraged and disappointed at this point.  The response of my bible study group was, “It will happen, just not now.”  Ok, maybe it will happen one day…or not.  Maybe God just told me what I needed to hear to get my life in order.  I’ve been working really hard to simplify my life and organize my house getting rid of the unnecessary clutter.  These are certainly positive things.  Maybe there was an effect on my ex-husband that I cannot see.  I know for a couple of weeks, he changed his behavior.  He was kinder to my daughter for a time.  She even made comments to support this, which are usually unheard of.  So, that’s certainly a positive outcome.  They weren’t normally known to get along very well.  We will not always understand God’s mysterious ways, but we still must obey with God speaks.
God’s timing is everything.  It is possible that God wanted me to prepare for a move now, with the actual move happening later.  Who am I to question God?  He has a plan, and he doesn’t always share every detail with us.  I read, “When circumstances do not align with what God is saying in the bible and in prayer, assume the timing may be wrong.  Then wait for God to reveal His timing.”
Moreover, when God directs you, His purpose will come to pass, but it may be in a way you had not anticipated, as in my situation.  Just because the outcome is different from expected, doesn’t mean God didn’t fulfill His purpose.  Or maybe He is still working in the situation and the timing for the outcome is in the future.  God may still move me one day, or it may be to a different city for Colorado Springs.  God may even keep me right here, as I learn to appreciate where I live right now.  When God called me, I allowed Him to work out the details in His timing.  In the meantime, I will be in prayer and continue to do all that I know to do and wait for the next word of instruction.
The message for me was to wait on the Lord.  Psalms 37:34 says, “Wait for the Lord and keep his way.  He will exalt you to inherit the land.”  I continue to wait in prayer.  I prayed to know God, His purposes and His ways.  God was silent.  God has perfect timing, and apparently the timing for this move was not for now.  But His ways are always right.  I continue to depend on Him to guide me in His way and in His timing to accomplish His purpose whether that is here or in a new land.  I continue doing the last thing God clearly told me to do, and that is to get organized.
I also decided to start embracing South Florida living.  I live in what most people would call paradise, although, I don’t get out and enjoy it enough.  Knowing now that I must remain in South Florida, at least for now, I decided to start checking off things from my bucket list.  I went kayaking, loved it so much, I bought one myself.  I went parasailing off Key Biscayne with the beautiful view of Downtown Miami.  I bought camping equipment, so that I could enjoy traveling around the campgrounds of Florida seeking out places I had never seen before.  I got certified in scuba diving, so that I could enjoy the beauty of the underwater world that God made in which we rarely see.  I made the decision to appreciate wherever I live from day to day.  I love Colorado, and I have imagined all the great adventures I could have if I lived there.  But I could also find some pretty good adventures right here.  I guess the lesson here is, “The grass is not always greener on the other side, just different.”

New Year's Camping Trip 2013

As a single mother with her daughter, it’s fun to watch fellow campers try to figure us out.  I mean, who does this?  I know I am unique.  I love the great outdoors, and I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty.  Sure, I’d love to have someone in my life who could help out in times like this.  But the fact is, I don’t.  I can’t live my life waiting for “help”.  I’ve wanted to camp, since I had my own family.  But there was always others holding me back.  Or really, I was holding myself back waiting for others to “tag along”.  In 2013, I decided to just do the things I want to do and not wait on people to do them with me.  I cannot be afraid to go it alone!  Yes, it’s a lot of work setting up, taking down, and even cooking.  Showers can sometimes be scarce, so you can’t be afraid to start to smell yourself, especially after spending a whole morning chopping wood.
Meeting camping neighbors is really nice.  Fortunately on our New Year’s trip, we met a very nice family on our first day!  It consisted of two married men with their two children from their previous marriages.  One man brought his 10 year old daughter, and the other had a 7 year old son.  Apparently their wives aren’t too keen on camping.  LOL!  Hannah has gotten very good at making new friends on these trips!  That was something she has struggled with in the past, since I always used to plan events with friends she knew.  They brought a lot of firewood from home, so we were usually warming up around their fire with our chairs in tow.  We shared foods with them, and vice versa.  But mostly, we ate at our own camp.  Ultimately, we were all quite compatible as camping buddies.  The kids all had bikes, so they really motivated Hannah to ride a lot.  This is GREAT!  And to think, I wasn’t going to bring the bikes.  This has been the most we’ve used them yet!
It has also been very cold camping!!!!  Even with all the sleeping bags and blankets we brought, I remained a little chilled at times.  We really have to layer up!  Hannah also likes to stay up till 10 or so, and then sleep till 9:30 am!  She’s really likes her sleep!  I finished chopping up firewood before she even woke up one morning.  I think she really didn’t want to get out of her warm bed.
We even visited Juniper Springs two days.  It was 63 degrees out, and the kids got in the 72 degree water!  On the third day, we visited the springs with our friends, who joined us camping.  The kids wanted to get in the water, but it was in the 40s or 50s!  It was too cold.  When our friends came out, our other camp buddies left, so this was perfect.  Hannah had friends to pal around with the whole time, and so did I.
It rained for 2 days straight, which got old really quick.  It also made it difficult to start fires with wet wood, but I persevered!  I was the official fire starter!  I have always LOVED building fires!  When I was a kid, I used to build bonfires in my back yard.  On this trip, I even was able to start the fire IN THE RAIN!  We had a great time enjoying the fire under our umbrellas.  We even roasted hotdogs and made s’mores in the rain!  I came up with some really funny campfire songs to share with the kids when our friends got there.  They couldn’t get the songs out of their heads!
It was in the 30s two nights in a row!  We were chilled, especially the second night.  Hannah woke up shivering, so I put like 4 layers of clothes on her with her sleeping bag zipped, another blanket and a comforter on top.  She wore her winter hat on her head and was toasty warm.  I had to do the same thing, but I had an extra comforter, since I tend to get colder than Hannah.  We even had on 4 pairs of socks!  I don’t think I care to camp any colder than this.
Fortunately, it didn’t rain on our last day, so I was able to put a way a DRY tent, for a change!!!  I just had to dry the bottom.  I even considered staying an extra night after spending 5 nights, but it was to rain the next day.  I didn’t want to risk having a wet tent!  So, we left.  We camped for 7 days!!!  This is our longest camping experience yet.
On the way home, we stopped in Jupiter, FL to visit some friends from my playgroup, Baby Bunch.  We had an impromptu party, so we didn’t get home till like midnight!  We still made it to church in the morning.  But I was super tired with puffy red eyes!!!  My cats had missed me so much, so I let them sleep with me….big mistake!  They wanted pet pet all night!

The Gift That You Gave

Thank you Lord for the gift you gave.
My daughter, so precious, the one that you made.
She sings, she dances, she makes me smile.
She even draws once in a while.

I love her so much, to the end of the earth.
My companion she has been since her birth.
I’ve wiped her tears and made her laugh.
I’ve watched her grow and prepared her path.

Thank you, Lord, for the gift you gave.
My daughter, so precious, the one that you made.
You matched her with me, her mother to be.
Our love is so special since you gave her to me.

The Single Mom Goes Camping

I’ve conquered yet one more thing from my bucket list of things I want to accomplish…goals I set out to reach.  I have wanted to go camping since when I was married.  Then, it was my husband who stopped me.  As a single mom, it was my own inadequacies stopping me.  I had never camped before and thought I needed to go with another family, so they could show me the ropes.  After 4 years single, it started to look like my camping trip would NEVER happen!  It was then, I made up my mind.  I wasn’t going to wait around anymore.  I decided Hannah and I were going camping on our own.  I can’t live my life waiting around for people to step up to help.  If I want to do something, I just have to do it myself.  This is what I’ve learned over the years.  So, I set out to buy my very own camping equipment.
Thank God for Facebook, where I put the question out there about how to camp?  Where to begin?  What I would need?  I have NEVER had so many responses on ANY post before!  My Facebook friends really came through for me!  They told me what to buy and how to do this camping thing.  I ended up being completely equipped and then some.  I had more than enough for our camping trip!  I bought the tent first.  I was told to buy Coleman and to get it a little on the bigger side.  It appears I went overboard, because I bought a tent that sleeps 8 people!  We called it our Wilderness Mansion!!!!  It was a lot of work to set up and take down, but I was able to do it myself, with a little help from Hannah.  It wasn’t that difficult to figure out, either.  I also decided we should bring bicycles!  Being that I didn’t own a bicycle, I started researching and bought a purple Mongoose bike for myself.  The problem was that it was mailed to me, which meant I had to put it together myself!  Bad idea!!!  I spent a whole night doing that and still didn’t feel it was right.
Then in order to transport our bikes, I needed a bike rack on my van.  So, I did my research yet again and bought a trailer hitch and bike rack.  Friends helped me install that.  One thing I wanted to do in Key Largo, where we were camping, was to go kayaking.  Another friend suggested buying an inflatable kayak!  Sure enough, I did my research and found one for $130!!!  You pay about $20 every time you rent a kayak, so this seemed like a worthwhile investment, and now I can take it out anywhere I want!  Like the tent, the kayak folds up in a bag and is easy to store.  I didn’t even need to add any equipment to my van to tote it along.

Hannah was so excited about our first camping trip and so was I!  We were to go for 2 nights in Key Largo at a higher end campground called Key Largo Kampground Camp & Marina.  We had a really nice site with electricity and water nearby.  So, we had electricity in our tent!  I was very glad to have a fan, as it was humid, even though somewhat cooler than usual for South FL.  I used a charcoal grill for the first time, too!  I grilled up burgers, hotdogs, and even pancakes!  We went out to dinner on our last night.  Hannah was “tired of smoked food”.  I think next time I’ll buy a little 2 burner portable stove to include more variety of foods without the smoked flavor.  The only problem we had was my extension cord didn’t work, so we had to buy a new one.  Fortunately, there was a K-mart right down the street!
I let Hannah jump in the pool after our site was all set up, even though it was already getting dark.  Then I grilled the burgers in the dark, but I had purchased a really nice LED lantern that worked nicely!  We had to go for a little walk to the bathrooms, but it didn’t bother us.  The bathrooms were clean, which is always nice at a campsite!  That first night, our neighbor decided to watch a really loud movie on their flat screen TV in their tent!!!!  Who would have thought?  It was difficult to sleep that night.  Besides that, I went to take 3 Advil, knowing I would be sore from all the setting up camp…but instead I took Excedrin Migraine, which has caffeine in it!  Not good for sleeping!!!  It was dark.  What can I say?
That first morning, we had to be up early to go on a snorkeling tour on the island.  It was very windy with rough surf.  So, visibility was really bad!  I have NEVER had such a bad snorkeling experience!  That was a wasted morning.  We came back and Hannah jumped in the pool while I showered.  She spent 2-3 hrs in the pool that day.  I found WiFi at the pool!  I grilled up hotdogs for lunch.  That evening we took out the kayak to watch the sunset.  The campgrounds were right on the water, so we had to carry the kayak down to the boat ramp.  Hannah was afraid it would sink!  It turned out to be my favorite thing on the whole trip!  It handled well and was easy to steer.  It was super comfortable!  I wish we could have stayed out longer, but the sun was setting.  We planned to go back out the next morning, but it rained.  So, I had to pack up everything, even the tent in the pouring rain!  That…was NOT fun!  After loading all up, we stopped by the bathrooms to take a shower and put on some dry clothes.  I couldn’t have been wetter had I jumped in the pool!  Then we drove back home, which took about 1 ½ hours.  I returned home completely and utterly exhausted!  But it was all well worth the effort.  I accomplished a big thing as a single mom!  I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me!  He did give me strength!  Next time, I’d like to stay longer.  It’s too much work for just 2 nights.  I can’t wait to take the kayak out again!

You Never Marry the Right Person

BY TIMOTHY KELLER
JANUARY 5, 2012
How our culture misunderstands compatibility.

In generations past, there was far less talk about “compatibility” and finding the ideal soul-mate. Today we are looking for someone who accepts us as we are and fulfills our desires, and this creates an unrealistic set of expectations that frustrates both the searchers and the searched for.
In John Tierney’s classic humor article “Picky, Picky, Picky” he tries nobly to get us to laugh at the impossible situation our culture has put us in. He recounts many of the reasons his single friends told him they had given up on their recent relationships:
“She mispronounced ‘Goethe.’” “How could I take him seriously after seeing The Road Less Traveled on his bookshelf?” “If she would just lose seven pounds.” “Sure, he’s a partner, but it’s not a big firm. And he wears those short black socks.” “Well, it started out great ... beautiful face, great body, nice smile. Everything was going fine—until she turned around.” He paused ominously and shook his head. ”... She had dirty elbows.”
In other words, some people in our culture want too much out of a marriage partner. They do not see marriage as two flawed people coming together to create a space of stability, love and consolation, a “haven in a heartless world,” as Christopher Lasch describes it. Rather, they are looking for someone who will accept them as they are, complement their abilities and fulfill their sexual and emotional desires. This will indeed require a woman who is “a novelist/astronaut with a background in fashion modeling,” and the equivalent in a man. A marriage based not on self-denial but on self-fulfillment will require a low- or no-maintenance partner who meets your needs while making almost no claims on you. Simply put—today people are asking far too much in the marriage partner.
You never marry the right person

The Bible explains why the quest for compatibility seems to be so impossible. As a pastor I have spoken to thousands of couples, some working on marriage-seeking, some working on marriage-sustaining and some working on marriage-saving. I’ve heard them say over and over, “Love shouldn’t be this hard, it should come naturally.” In response I always say something like: “Why believe that? Would someone who wants to play professional baseball say, ‘It shouldn’t be so hard to hit a fastball’? Would someone who wants to write the greatest American novel of her generation say, ‘It shouldn’t be hard to create believable characters and compelling narrative’?” The understandable retort is: “But this is not baseball or literature. This is love. Love should just come naturally if two people are compatible, if they are truly soul-mates. “

The Christian answer to this is that no two people are compatible. Duke University Ethics professor Stanley Hauerwas has famously made this point:
Destructive to marriage is the self-fulfillment ethic that assumes marriage and the family are primarily institutions of personal fulfillment, necessary for us to become "whole" and happy. The assumption is that there is someone just right for us to marry and that if we look closely enough we will find the right person. This moral assumption overlooks a crucial aspect to marriage. It fails to appreciate the fact that we always marry the wrong person. We never know whom we marry; we just think we do. Or even if we first marry the right person, just give it a while and he or she will change. For marriage, being [the enormous thing it is] means we are not the same person after we have entered it. The primary challenge of marriage is learning how to love and care for the stranger to whom you find yourself married.
Hauerwas gives us the first reason that no two people are compatible for marriage, namely, that marriage profoundly changes us. But there is another reason. Any two people who enter into marriage are spiritually broken by sin, which among other things means to be self-centered—living life incurvatus in se. As author Denis de Rougemont said, “Why should neurotic, selfish, immature people suddenly become angels when they fall in love ... ?” That is why a good marriage is more painfully hard to achieve than athletic or artistic prowess. Raw, natural talent does not enable you to play baseball as a pro or write great literature without enduring discipline and enormous work. Why would it be easy to live lovingly and well with another human being in light of what is profoundly wrong within our human nature? Indeed, many people who have mastered athletics and art have failed miserably at marriage. So the biblical doctrine of sin explains why marriage—more than anything else that is good and important in this fallen world—is so painful and hard.
No false choices
The reason that marriage is so painful and yet wonderful is because it is a reflection of the Gospel, which is painful and wonderful at once. The Gospel is—we are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared to believe, and at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope. This is the only kind of relationship that will really transform us. Love without truth is sentimentality; it supports and affirms us but keeps us in denial about our flaws. Truth without love is harshness; it gives us information but in such a way that we cannot really hear it. God’s saving love in Christ, however, is marked by both radical truthfulness about who we are and yet also radical, unconditional commitment to us. The merciful commitment strengthens us to see the truth about ourselves and repent. The conviction and repentance moves us to cling to and rest in God’s mercy and grace.
The hard times of marriage drive us to experience more of this transforming love of God. But a good marriage will also be a place where we experience more of this kind of transforming love at a human level.

Hearing God...Are You Listening?

Acts 17:11 Bible Studies

Hearing God

Rev 3:22 (NIV) "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

  • Sandy Gregory's Story Of The Remote Employee
  • Imagine you are hired to open up an office in Anchorage, Alaska. Your new boss gives you a high-tech looking two-way radio, a policy and procedure manual, and tells you that you will receive instructions once you arrive, and off you go. Upon arrival you hear your boss's voice over the radio, saying, "I will communicate to you through this radio unit. But take note: our competitors, our enemies, also have access to this channel. They will try to impersonate my voice with false messages to thwart our purposes." "Oh no!" you panic, "Then how will I know if it is you or the enemy giving me instructions?"
Your boss's voice comes back over the radio: "Three ways. First, considering the situation, check every message supposedly from me against the policy and procedure manual. Since I wrote it, I'm not likely to ask you to violate it, right? Also, if I am not talking, don't focus in on the noise, pretending that I am. If I am not speaking, let the manual be your guide. Don't let any impersonating voice mislead you, or your own overactive imagination."
"Second, since the Manual does not cover every situation, you will have to get to know my voice. I know, this will take time, and so I am not likely to ask you to do anything radical until we both have some low-risk successes under our belts. Remember, I understand the situation perfectly well, so I'll go slow at first. A time will come when I will be able to tell you to do the wildest things, and you will know it is me. In the short-term, you must be trained through low-risk experience."
"Third, over time, my overall purpose for your work will begin to come into focus. You will begin to see the grand strategy in the policy and procedure manual, and the overall pattern of my true instructions. When this happens, you'll know instantly if what you hear through your unit is 'of me', just your imagination, or enemy misinformation. False instructions will begin to appear silly to you then. So take heart, and get to work."
After reflecting on this a few moments, you hear your boss's voice again on the radio unit. "Take all of the money from petty cash and give it the next person that walks in, no questions asked." Hmmm... You look in the policy and procedure manual, and this is specifically forbidden. Besides, you know your boss wouldn't tell you to do something that risky right off. And also there was an certain "twang" to the voice, an appeal to something different within you, and a plan that was not in the long-term interests of the company. So, even though you are on a hostile channel, you are beginning to have hope that you can indeed do this job.

    Hearing Things...

  • God speaks to us through our minds and hearts. God occasionally speaks audibly to His children when He has placed them in situations that require great faith. Thus, the miraculous aspect of a physical voice coming from nowhere allows us to believe in situations that are beyond us.
  • John 12:28 (NIV) [Jesus prayed,] "Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine."
  • Why did Jesus go out of His way to point out that the voice was not for His benefit? Because He heard God all the time. He was in constant communion with the Father. But the disciples needed to hear it, so they could have faith to believe. Remember, Jesus was about to be rejected by the religious establishment, taunted and humiliated, and executed. So God spoke audibly. God knows when we need a sure word, and works around our lack of maturity in times of great need.
  • 2 Pet 1:16-19 (NIV) We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

God Will Do What He Says

Rom 4:17 (NIV) As it is written: "I have made you a father of many nations." He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed--the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.
Gal 4:22-23,29 (NIV) For it is written that Abraham had two sons [Ishmael first, and then Isaac], one by the slave woman [Hagar] and the other by the free woman [Sarah]. His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way [the flesh]; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise [the Spirit]... At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now.

  • You know the story. God promised Abraham a son in Gen 15:4. The problem came when after receiving this promise, Sarah suggested an idea to move ahead in the flesh and "assist" God. The "Ishmael" mistake of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar is not uncommon. We are often deceived into thinking that God needs our help. What is praiseworthy of Abraham and Sarah is that after this false start, they remembered God's promise and got back to simple faith and obedience, believing that God would help them... and not vice-versa.
  • Num 23:19 (NIV) God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
  • God calls Isaac "Abraham's only son" in Gen 22:2,12,16. From God's point of view, "the flesh counts for nothing" (John 6:63). God did not remember Abraham's sin, only his faith, which was credited to him as full righteousness before God (Rom 4:3). His mistakes were forgotten (Micah 7:19). Like Abraham, we need to enter into God's rest, knowing that what God says He will do. For he who enters into rest has ceased from his own works (Heb 4:10).
  • Isa 55:1-11 (NIV) "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live..." Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon... "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

    Discerning God's Voice

Isa 42:1-2 (NIV) "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets."
Mat 17:5 (NIV) While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"

  • Outside of miraculous visitations and audible voices, our general problem is one of hearing God's "still small voice". What would the Spirit have us do next? This leadership comes through "promptings" to our hearts or minds, which are generally low-risk until we mature. God tells us to call someone late at night; to give someone the money in our pocket; to offer to pray with someone about something very specific that we couldn't have known. Often, we'll go wrong, but if we humbly reflect on our errors we can gain confidence for future promptings.
  • Prov 14:15 (NIV) A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.
  • The problem is that we are on a hostile channel. Our minds can be prompted by God, from our own carnal desires, or from unclean spirits. Some ignore this and naively believe that anything they think or feel is from God, without humility or reflection. This may seem a silly error, but it can become serious when such a person thinks God has told them to "go kill someone". Manson, who still claims to be a Christian, heard from his "god" in this fashion many times.
  • 2 Cor 11:3 (NIV) But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.2 Tim 3:13-17 (NIV) ...evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it... you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  • Beyond demonic promptings, our routine problem is the flesh. We want to look spiritual, we covet something, we want to defend ourselves. These often get blamed on God, and acted upon. These seemingly silly errors can lead to as much spiritual mayhem and abuse as Manson's delusions did physically. We must learn to walk a straight line before attempting to tightrope across Niagara Falls. Our problem is lack of reflection on past performance.
  • Rom 7:21-23 (NIV) So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.2 Cor 10:3-5 (NIV) For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

  • If we have learned to discern God's voice in small things by acting on God's low-risk promptings and finding them validated with fruit that lasts, then God may prompt us to "tell that person I am going to heal them". At this point of maturity, those practiced at knowing God's voice need not pretend or merely hope. They can speak with authority, conviction, and results (Rom. 12:2). They need not be double-minded or resort to psychological gymnastics (James 1:5-8). They can pray in real faith (James 5:15). For "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Rom. 10:17).
  • Who's Not Listening Now?

Jer 6:10 (NIV) "To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it."
Zech 7:11-13 (NIV) "But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and stopped up their ears. They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen... So the Lord Almighty was very angry. "When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,' says the Lord Almighty."
Mat 13:12-17 (NIV) "Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: [from Isa 6:9-11] 'Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.' In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: 'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people's heart has become callused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.' But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it."

    Obeying The Father's Voice

  • Often we ask God to speak to us, only to hear back, "if you are so interested in what I think, then why didn't you do the last thing I told you?" Obedience is the response that keeps the dialog going. If we refuse to do what God tells us in the little things, we risk deafening our spiritual ear. If we refuse to do what God speaks in the big things, we risk his active rebuke.
  • 1 Sam 15:22 (NIV) ..."Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings ...as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice..." (Mat 21:28-31)
  • Imagine your own son coming to you in great earnestness and saying, "Father, please speak to me. What would you have me do?" You respond, "I would like you to clean your room." Thrilled at the sound of your voice, the child goes off elated, but does not clean the room. Later, he approaches again, "Father, please disclose your will to your humble child." You tell him again, "Go clean your room." Pleased, he withdraws himself again, but does not do what you asked. Yet again, your son comes to you, "Oh great father, I long to do your bidding! Grant me the favor of your wisdom and direction." What would you do at this point? Perhaps a stare would suffice... What does God do when we play this game with Him?
  • James 1:22 (NIV) Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

    Orders From On High

Isa 30:20-21 (NIV) Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it."
John 10:2-5 (NIV) "The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice."
